But if someone says to you, “This is from a sacrifice,” do not eat, because of the one who told you and because of conscience ¹  –

let us draw near with a sincere heart in the assurance that faith brings, ¹  because we have had our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience ²  and our bodies washed in pure water.

Afterward David’s conscience bothered him ¹  because he had cut off an edge of Saul’s robe.

But this knowledge is not shared by all. And some, by being accustomed to idols in former times, eat this food as an idol sacrifice, and their conscience, because it is weak, is defiled.

Therefore, because we know the fear of the Lord, ¹  we try to persuade ²  people, ³  but we are well known ⁴  to God, and I hope we are well known to your consciences too.

how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our ¹  consciences from dead works to worship the living God.

For our reason for confidence ¹  is this: the testimony of our conscience, that with pure motives ²  and sincerity which are from God ³  – not by human wisdom ⁴  but by the grace of God – we conducted ourselves in the world, and all the more ⁵  toward you.

For this finds God’s favor, ¹  if because of conscience toward God ²  someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly.

Your conscience will not be overwhelmed with guilt ¹  for having poured out innocent blood and for having taken matters into your own hands. When the Lord has granted my lord success, ²  please remember your servant.”

But we have rejected ¹  shameful hidden deeds, ²  not behaving ³  with deceptiveness ⁴  or distorting the word of God, but by open proclamation of the truth we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience before God.

The one who is tormented ¹  by the murder ²  of another will flee to the pit; ³  let no one support him.

I will maintain my righteousness and never let it go; my conscience ¹  will not reproach me for as long as I live. ² 

that ¹  if our conscience condemns ²  us, that ³  God is greater than our conscience and knows all things.

Dear friends, if our conscience does not condemn us, we have confidence in the presence of God,

Now when they heard this, they began to drift away one at a time, starting with the older ones, ¹  until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.

For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not acquitted because of this. The one who judges me is the Lord.

¹ ‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean ²  and have no iniquity.

She persuaded him ¹  with persuasive words; ²  with her smooth talk ³  she compelled him. ⁴ 

Blessed is the one who is always cautious, ¹  but whoever hardens his heart ²  will fall into evil.

They ¹  were both righteous in the sight of God, following ²  all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly. ³
