But when he saw many Pharisees ¹  and Sadducees ²  coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

For all of you who ¹  were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

and all were baptized ¹  into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,

Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

Jesus Christ is the one who came by water and blood – not by the water only, but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because ¹  the Spirit is the truth.

Now when Jesus ¹  knew that the Pharisees ²  had heard that he ³  was winning ⁴  and baptizing more disciples than John

For ¹  John baptized with water, but you ²  will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

I thank God ¹  that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,

(I also baptized the household of Stephanus. Otherwise, I do not remember whether I baptized anyone else.)

Do they not blaspheme the good name of the one you belong to? ¹ 

So John ¹  said to the crowds ²  that came out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers! ³  Who warned you to flee ⁴  from the coming wrath?

However, the Pharisees ¹  and the experts in religious law ²  rejected God’s purpose ³  for themselves, because they had not been baptized ⁴  by John. ⁵ ) ⁶ 

John ¹  was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, ²  because water was plentiful there, and people were coming ³  to him ⁴  and being baptized.

Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? ¹  If the dead are not raised at all, then why are they baptized for them?

After ¹  Jesus was baptized, just as he was coming up out of the water, the ²  heavens ³  opened ⁴  and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove ⁵  and coming on him.

Jesus ¹  answered, “You don’t know what you are asking! ²  Are you able to drink the cup I am about to drink?” ³  They said to him, “We are able.” ⁴ 

and he was baptizing them ¹  in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John to be baptized by him in the Jordan River. ¹ 

These things happened in Bethany ¹  across the Jordan River ²  where John was baptizing.
