Throughout every province and throughout every city where the king’s edict and his law arrived, the Jews experienced happiness and joy, banquets and holidays. Many of the resident peoples ¹  pretended ²  to be Jews, because the fear of the Jews had overcome them. ³ 

They ¹  came up to him again and again ²  and said, “Hail, king of the Jews!” ³  And they struck him repeatedly ⁴  in the face.

When both the Gentiles and the Jews (together with their rulers) made ¹  an attempt to mistreat ²  them and stone them, ³ 

Mordecai the Jew was second only to King Ahasuerus. He was the highest-ranking ¹  Jew, and he was admired by his numerous relatives. ²  He worked enthusiastically ³  for the good of his people and was an advocate for the welfare of ⁴  all his descendants. ⁵ 

Now the Jewish feast of Passover ¹  was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. ² 

Now a certain man, a Pharisee ¹  named Nicodemus, who was a member of the Jewish ruling council, ² 

However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jewish leaders. ¹ 

Another sharp division took place among the Jewish people ¹  because of these words.

Yet all of this fails to satisfy me so long as I have to see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.”

Above ¹  his head they put the charge against him, ²  which read: ³  “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.”

So Pilate asked them, ¹  “Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?”

Now a dispute came about between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew ¹  concerning ceremonial washing. ² 

Pilate also had a notice ¹  written and fastened to the cross, ²  which read: ³  “Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews.”

Now there were devout Jews ¹  from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem. ² 

But the Jews who refused to believe ¹  stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds ²  against the brothers.

He addressed ¹  both Jews and Greeks in the synagogue ²  every Sabbath, attempting to persuade ³  them.

for he refuted the Jews vigorously ¹  in public debate, ²  demonstrating from the scriptures that the Christ ³  was Jesus. ⁴ 

For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple courts ¹  and were trying to kill me.

For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision something that is outward in the flesh,

even us, whom he has called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?
