When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his robe and went out and stood at the entrance to the cave. All of a sudden ¹  a voice asked him, “Why are you here, Elijah?”

He took the cloak that had fallen off Elijah, ¹  hit the water with it, and said, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” When he hit the water, it divided and Elisha crossed over.

When Ahab saw Elijah, he ¹  said to him, “Is it really you, the one who brings disaster ²  on Israel?”

And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, who is to come.

They answered, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, ¹  and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

The disciples asked him, ¹  “Why then do the experts in the law ²  say that Elijah must come first?”

He ¹  answered, “Elijah does indeed come first and will restore all things.

When ¹  some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “This man is calling for Elijah.”

But the rest said, “Leave him alone! Let’s see if Elijah will come to save him.” ¹ 

They said, ¹  “John the Baptist, others say Elijah, ²  and still others, one of the prophets.”

Then ¹  they asked him, ²  “Why do the experts in the law ³  say that Elijah must come first?”

When some of the bystanders heard it they said, “Listen, he is calling for Elijah!” ¹ 

Yet ¹  Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. ² 

while others were saying that Elijah ¹  had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had risen. ² 

But I tell you that Elijah has certainly come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written about him.”

She went and did as Elijah told her; there was always enough food for Elijah and for her and her family. ¹ 

The Lord’s angelic messenger said to Elijah, “Go down with him. Don’t be afraid of him.” So he got up and went down ¹  with him to the king.

He picked up Elijah’s cloak, which had fallen off him, and went back and stood on the shore of the Jordan.

Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen; he was near the twelfth pair. Elijah passed by him and threw his robe over him.

The Lord told him: ¹
