they must wash ¹  their hands and their feet so that they do not die. And this ²  will be a perpetual ordinance for them and for their descendants ³  throughout their generations.” ⁴ 

If the Lord delights in us, then he will bring us into this land and give it to us – a land that is flowing with milk and honey. ¹ 

But I will bring in your little ones, whom you said would become victims of war, ¹  and they will enjoy ²  the land that you have despised.

So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fee for divination in their hand. They came to Balaam and reported ¹  to him the words of Balak.

The donkey saw me and turned from me these three times. If ¹  she had not turned from me, I would have killed you but saved her alive.”

Then he looked on the Kenites and uttered this oracle: “Your dwelling place seems strong, and your nest ¹  is set on a rocky cliff.

Then they came very close to him and said, “We will build sheep folds here for our flocks and cities for our families, ¹ 

So build cities for your descendants and pens for your sheep, but do what you have said ¹  you would do.”

you must then designate some towns as towns of refuge for you, to which a person who has killed someone unintentionally may flee.

And they must stand as your towns of refuge from the avenger in order that the killer may not die until he has stood trial before the community.

“You must give three towns on this side of the Jordan, and you must give three towns in the land of Canaan; they must be towns of refuge.

These six towns will be places of refuge for the Israelites, and for the foreigner, and for the settler among them, so that anyone who kills any person accidentally may flee there.

because the slayer ¹  should have stayed in his town of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest, the slayer may return to the land of his possessions.

And you must not accept a ransom for anyone who has fled to a town of refuge, to allow him to return home and live on his own land before the death of the high priest. ¹ 

Anyone who accidentally killed someone ¹  without hating him at the time of the accident ²  could flee to one of those cities and be safe.

Furthermore, the Lord your God will release hornets ¹  among them until the very last ones who hide from you ²  perish.

Now this is the law pertaining to one who flees there in order to live, ¹  if he has accidentally killed another ²  without hating him at the time of the accident. ³ 

If you build a new house, you must construct a guard rail ¹  around your roof to avoid being culpable ²  in the event someone should fall from it.

The everlasting God is a refuge, and underneath you are his eternal arms; ¹  he has driven out enemies before you, and has said, “Destroy!”

that you will spare the lives of my father, mother, brothers, sisters, and all who belong to them, and rescue us ¹  from death.”
