It is better to live on a corner of the housetop than in a house in company with a quarrelsome wife. ¹

But if the man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, then she ¹  must go to the elders at the town gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel; he is unwilling to perform the duty of a brother-in-law to me!”

The young woman’s father must say to the elders, “I gave my daughter to this man and he has rejected ¹  her.

He followed in the footsteps of the kings of Israel, just as Ahab’s dynasty had done, for he married Ahab’s daughter. ¹  He did evil in the sight of ²  the Lord.

Rehoboam married ¹  Mahalath the daughter of David’s son Jerimoth and of ²  Abihail, the daughter of Jesse’s son Eliab.

No widow should be put on the list ¹  unless ²  she is at least sixty years old, was the wife of one husband, ³

Then Abraham got up from mourning his dead wife ¹  and said to the sons of Heth, ² 

But his father and mother said to him, “Certainly you can find a wife among your relatives or among all our ¹  people! You should not have to go and get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines.” ²  But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, ³  because she is the right one for me.” ⁴
