for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising ¹  God. Then Peter said,

I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you,

Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they? ¹ 

So then, brothers and sisters, ¹  be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid anyone from speaking in tongues. ² 

to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy, and to another discernment of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

I, the Lord, affirm ¹  that I am opposed to those prophets who are using their own tongues to declare, ‘The Lord declares….’ ² 

And tongues spreading out like a fire ¹  appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them.

But they deceived him with their words, ¹  and lied to him. ² 

and when Paul placed ¹  his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came ²  upon them, and they began to speak ³  in tongues and to prophesy. ⁴ 

They ¹  sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge, ² 

Their tongues wound like a serpent; ¹  a viper’s ²  venom is behind ³  their lips. (Selah)

“Their throats are open graves, ¹  they deceive with their tongues, the poison of asps is under their lips.” ² 

Love never ends. But if there are prophecies, they will be set aside; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be set aside.

Confuse them, ¹  O Lord! Frustrate their plans! ²  For I see violence and conflict in the city.

You hide them with you, where they are safe from the attacks ¹  of men; ²  you conceal them in a shelter, where they are safe from slanderous attacks. ³ 

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but I do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

I wish you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be strengthened.

the voices of the nobles fell silent, ¹  and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.

both Jews and proselytes, ¹  Cretans and Arabs – we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!” ² 

So then, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers.
