Therefore do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, ¹  if the world hates you. ² 

Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must all ¹  be born from above.’ ² 

Dear friends, do not be astonished ¹  that a trial by fire is occurring among you, ²  as though something strange were happening to you.

The ¹  Pharisee was astonished when he saw that Jesus ²  did not first wash his hands ³  before the meal.

Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He ¹  called the centurion and asked him if he had been dead for some time.

“Do not be amazed at this, because a time ¹  is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice

So ¹  they are astonished ²  when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you. ³ 

They ¹  were amazed ²  at his teaching, because he spoke ³  with authority. ⁴ 

“See how Babylon ¹  has been captured! See how the pride of the whole earth has been taken! See what an object of horror Babylon has become among the nations! ² 

Then the Jewish leaders ¹  were astonished ²  and said, “How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?” ³ 

If you see the extortion ¹  of the poor, or the perversion ²  of justice and fairness in the government, ³  do not be astonished by the matter. For the high official is watched by a higher official, ⁴  and there are higher ones over them! ⁵ 

Now at that very moment his disciples came back. ¹  They were shocked ²  because he was speaking ³  with a woman. However, no one said, “What do you want?” ⁴  or “Why are you speaking with her?”

Her towns ¹  will be captured. Her fortresses will be taken. At that time the soldiers of Moab will be frightened like a woman in labor. ² 

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one ¹  who called you by the grace of Christ ²  and are following ³  a different ⁴  gospel –

May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!” be humiliated ¹  and disgraced! ² 

(2:1) ¹  Once again I looked and this time I saw four horns.

The ¹  disciples were greatly astonished when they heard this and said, “Then who can be saved?” ² 

When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching.

They were even more astonished and said ¹  to one another, “Then ²  who can be saved?” ³ 

Jesus replied, ¹  “I performed one miracle ²  and you are all amazed. ³
