saying, “We gave ¹  you strict orders ²  not to teach in this name. ³  Look, ⁴  you have filled Jerusalem ⁵  with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood ⁶  on us!”

He strictly ordered that no one should know about this, ¹  and told them to give her something to eat.

Then someone from the army informed him, “Your father put the army under a strict oath ¹  saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food today!’ That is why the army is tired.”

Each competitor must exercise self-control in everything. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one.

“Therefore stay alert, because you do not know on what day ¹  your Lord will come.

Therefore stay alert, because you do not know the day or the hour. ¹ 

Immediately Jesus ¹  sent the man ²  away with a very strong warning.

But ¹  he sternly ordered them not to make him known. ² 

What I say to you I say to everyone: Stay alert!”

For the Lord gave me strict orders, ¹  ‘Do not eat or drink ²  there; do not go back the way you came.’”

The Israelites followed the Lord’s instructions to Moses and divided up the land. ¹ 

Receiving such orders, he threw them in the inner cell ¹  and fastened their feet in the stocks. ² 

Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Stay alert, then, because you do not know when the owner of the house will return – whether during evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or at dawn –

They know, ¹  because they have known ²  me from time past, ³  if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest party ⁴  of our religion, I lived as a Pharisee. ⁵ 

I was circumcised on the eighth day, from the people of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews. I lived according to the law as a Pharisee. ¹ 

For the Lord gave me strict orders, ¹  ‘Do not eat or drink ²  there and do not go home the way you came.’”

and he cried out to the prophet from Judah, “This is what the Lord says, ‘You ¹  have rebelled against the Lord ²  and have not obeyed the command the Lord your God gave you.

You have issued an edict, O king, that everyone must bow down and pay homage to the golden statue when they hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, trigon, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music.

For ¹  in the wilderness of Zin when the community rebelled against me, you ²  rebelled against my command ³  to show me as holy ⁴  before their eyes over the water – the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.”
