“Babylon must fall ¹  because of the Israelites she has killed, ²  just as the earth’s mortally wounded fell because of Babylon. ³ 

Let them fall ¹  slain in the land of Babylonia, ²  mortally wounded in the streets of her cities. ³ 

You have killed many people in this city; you have filled its streets with corpses.’

The noisy city is full of raucous sounds; the town is filled with revelry. ¹  Your slain were not cut down by the sword; they did not die in battle. ² 

for she has brought down ¹  many fatally wounded, and all those she has slain are many. ² 

I will fill its mountains with its dead; on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines, those killed by the sword will fall.

The beauty ¹  of Israel lies slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!

How the warriors have fallen in the midst of battle! Jonathan lies slain on your high places!

The slain will fall among you and then you will know that I am the Lord. ¹ 

“You ¹  Ethiopians ²  will also die by my sword!” ³ 

Has the Lord struck down Israel like he did their oppressors? ¹  Has Israel been killed like their enemies? ² 

And its young ones devour the blood, and where the dead carcasses ¹  are, there it is.”

ס (Samek) You shrouded yourself ¹  with anger and then pursued us; you killed without mercy.

Among the dead they have made a bed for her, along with all her hordes around her grave. ¹  All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword, for their terror had spread in the land of the living. They bear their shame along with those who descend to the pit; they are placed among the dead.

And in that very night Belshazzar, the Babylonian king, ¹  was killed. ²

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of warriors, the bow of Jonathan was not turned away. The sword of Saul never returned ¹  empty.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel. The Israelites fled before the Philistines and many of them fell dead on Mount Gilboa.

Their slain will be left unburied, ¹  their corpses will stink; ²  the hills will soak up their blood. ³
