When he arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, ¹  bringing many serious ²  charges that they were not able to prove. ³ 

Likewise also their wives ¹  must be dignified, not slanderous, temperate, faithful in every respect.

Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, ¹  sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. ² 

For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer. ¹ 

But if there is serious injury, then you will give a life for a life,

If they have any kind of blemish – lameness, blindness, or anything else ¹  – you may not offer them as a sacrifice to the Lord your God.

Deacons likewise must be dignified, ¹  not two-faced, ²  not given to excessive drinking, ³  not greedy for gain,

But just as Paul was about to speak, ¹  Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of some crime or serious piece of villainy, ²  I would have been justified in accepting the complaint ³  of you Jews, ⁴ 

Encourage younger men likewise to be self-controlled, ¹ 

But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his household with severe diseases ¹  because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

For if we are out of our minds, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you.

Grieve, mourn, ¹  and weep. Turn your laughter ²  into mourning and your joy into despair.

Here is ¹  a misfortune ²  on earth ³  that I have seen: Wealth hoarded by its owner to his own misery.

This is another misfortune: ¹  Just as he came, so will he go. What did he gain from toiling for the wind?

Sarah’s demand displeased Abraham greatly because Ishmael was his son. ¹ 

“When someone has a diseased infection, ¹  he must be brought to the priest.

“This is the law for all diseased infections, for scall, ¹ 

He would certainly rebuke ¹  you if you secretly ²  showed partiality!

Does he argue ¹  with useless ²  talk, with words that have no value in them?

“How long until you ¹  make an end of words? ²  You must consider, ³  and then ⁴  we can talk.
