Smoke streams from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning ¹  rushes.

The canals ¹  will stink; ²  the streams of Egypt will trickle and then dry up; the bulrushes and reeds will decay,

He breaks through against me, time and time again; ¹  he rushes ²  against me like a warrior.

If the river rages, ¹  it is not disturbed, it is secure, ²  though the Jordan should surge up to its mouth.

The dry soil will become a pool of water, the parched ground springs of water. Where jackals once lived and sprawled out, grass, reeds, and papyrus will grow.

Can the papyrus plant grow tall ¹  where there is no marsh? Can reeds flourish ²  without water?

defiantly charging against him ¹  with a thick, strong shield! ² 

I have listened to them very carefully, ¹  but they do not speak honestly. None of them regrets the evil he has done. None of them says, “I have done wrong!” ²  All of them persist in their own wayward course ³  like a horse charging recklessly into battle.

Many spread their cloaks on the road and others spread branches they had cut in the fields.

Even though he flourishes like a reed plant, ¹  a scorching east wind will come, a wind from the Lord rising up from the desert. As a result, his spring will dry up; ²  his well will become dry. That wind ³  will spoil all his delightful foods in the containers in his storehouse.
