Otherwise, ¹  when he has laid ²  a foundation and is not able to finish the tower, ³  all who see it ⁴  will begin to make fun of ⁵  him.

If a wise person ¹  goes to court ²  with a foolish person, there is no peace ³  whether he is angry or laughs. ⁴ 

Oh, how shattered Moab will be! Oh, how her people will wail! Oh, how she will turn away ¹  in shame! Moab will become an object of ridicule, a terrifying sight to all the nations that surround her.”

You will become an occasion of horror, a proverb, and an object of ridicule to all the peoples to whom the Lord will drive you.

For did not you people of Moab laugh at the people of Israel? Did you think that they were nothing but thieves, ¹  that you shook your head in contempt ²  every time you talked about them? ³ 

Even youngsters have scorned me; when I get up, ¹  they scoff at me. ² 

You made us ¹  an object of ridicule ²  among the nations; foreigners treat us with contempt. ³ 

I wear sackcloth and they ridicule me. ¹ 

Fools mock ¹  at reparation, ²  but among the upright there is favor. ³ 

I have become the laughingstock of all people, ¹  their mocking song ²  all day long. ³ 

I will bring such disaster on them that all the kingdoms of the earth will be horrified. I will make them an object of reproach, a proverbial example of disaster. I will make them an object of ridicule, an example to be used in curses. ¹  That is how they will be remembered wherever I banish them. ² 

For I solemnly swear,” ¹  says the Lord, “that Bozrah ²  will become a pile of ruins. It will become an object of horror and ridicule, an example to be used in curses. ³  All the towns around it will lie in ruins forever.”

“But all these nations will someday taunt him ¹  and ridicule him with proverbial sayings: ²  ‘The one who accumulates what does not belong to him is as good as dead ³  (How long will this go on?) ⁴  – he who gets rich by extortion!’ ⁵ 

All who see me taunt ¹  me; they mock me ²  and shake their heads. ³ 

before the vindictive enemy who ridicules and insults me. ¹ 

Arrogant people do nothing but scoff at me. ¹  Yet I do not turn aside from your law.

We have had our fill ¹  of the taunts of the self-assured, of the contempt of the proud.

I will bring on you lasting shame and lasting disgrace which will never be forgotten!’”

The Pharisees ¹  (who loved money) heard all this and ridiculed ²  him.

At times you were publicly exposed to abuse and afflictions, and at other times you came to share with others who were treated in that way.
