So Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border; therefore Israel turned away from him.

They did not keep their covenant with God, ¹  and they refused to obey ²  his law.

By faith, when he grew up, Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,

But Queen Vashti refused ¹  to come at the king’s bidding ²  conveyed through the eunuchs. Then the king became extremely angry, and his rage consumed ³  him.

“But they refused to pay attention, turning away stubbornly and stopping their ears so they could not hear.

However, ¹  because ²  I called but you refused to listen, ³  because ⁴  I stretched out my hand ⁵  but no one paid attention,

But the people refused to heed Samuel’s warning. ¹  Instead they said, “No! There will be a king over us!

But Elisha ¹  replied, “As certainly as the Lord lives (whom I serve), ²  I will take nothing from you.” Naaman ³  insisted that he take it, but he refused.

Lord, I know you look for faithfulness. ¹  But even when you punish these people, they feel no remorse. ²  Even when you nearly destroy them, they refuse to be corrected. They have become as hardheaded as a rock. ³  They refuse to change their ways. ⁴ 

But the older son ¹  became angry ²  and refused ³  to go in. His father came out and appealed to him,

All his sons and daughters stood by ¹  him to console him, but he refused to be consoled. “No,” he said, “I will go to the grave mourning my son.” ²  So Joseph’s ³  father wept for him.

But he refused, saying ¹  to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not give any thought ²  to his household with me here, ³  and everything that he owns he has put into my care. ⁴ 

But he refused, saying, “I won’t eat!” Both his servants and the woman urged ¹  him to eat, so he gave in. ²  He got up from the ground and sat down on the bed.

But when she took the pan and set it before him, he refused to eat. Instead Amnon said, “Get everyone out of here!” ¹  So everyone left. ² 

One of the members of the prophetic guild, speaking with divine authority, ordered his companion, “Wound me!” ¹  But the man refused to wound him.

They will return to Egypt! ¹  Assyria will rule over them ²  because they refuse to repent! ³ 

So the princes of Moab departed ¹  and went back to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”

Then Ahaziah son of Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, “Let my sailors join yours in the fleet,” ¹  but Jehoshaphat refused.

But he refused. Instead, he went out and threw him in prison until he repaid the debt.

Some were convinced ¹  by what he said, ²  but others refused ³  to believe.
