So Philip ran up ¹  to it ²  and heard the man ³  reading Isaiah the prophet. He ⁴  asked him, ⁵  “Do you understand what you’re reading?”

Until I come, give attention to the public reading of scripture, ¹  to exhortation, to teaching.

and was returning home, sitting ¹  in his chariot, reading ²  the prophet Isaiah.

When you finish reading this scroll aloud, tie a stone to it and throw it into the middle of the Euphrates River. ¹ 

They read from the book of God’s law, explaining it ¹  and imparting insight. Thus the people ²  gained understanding from what was read.

After the reading from the law and the prophets, ¹  the leaders of the synagogue ²  sent them a message, ³  saying, “Brothers, ⁴  if you have any message ⁵  of exhortation ⁶  for the people, speak it.” ⁷ 

Now the passage of scripture the man ¹  was reading was this: “He was led like a sheep to slaughter, and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did ²  not open his mouth.

When the governor ¹  had read ²  the letter, ³  he asked ⁴  what province he was from. ⁵  When he learned ⁶  that he was from Cilicia, ⁷ 

When reading this, ¹  you will be able to ²  understand my insight into this secret ³  of Christ.

So Baruch son of Neriah did exactly what the prophet Jeremiah had told him to do. He read what the Lord had said from the scroll in the temple of the Lord. ¹ 

He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you understand it?” ¹ 

But their minds were closed. ¹  For to this very day, the same veil remains when they hear the old covenant read. ²  It has not been removed because only in Christ is it taken away. ³ 

They said to him, “Please sit down and read it to us.” So Baruch sat down and read it to them. ¹ 

Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read from the scroll in the hearing of the people. ¹ 

When they heard the law, they removed from Israel all who were of mixed ancestry.

Zephaniah the priest read that letter to the prophet Jeremiah. ¹ 

When they read it aloud, ¹  the people ²  rejoiced at its encouragement. ³ 

but Israel even though pursuing ¹  a law of righteousness ²  did not attain it. ³ 

He passed his son ¹  through the fire ²  and practiced divination and omen reading. He set up a ritual pit to conjure up underworld spirits, and appointed magicians to supervise it. ³  He did a great amount of evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger. ⁴ 

On that day the book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing ¹  of the people. They found ²  written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite may ever enter the assembly of God,
