They are calloused; ¹  they speak arrogantly. ² 

Surely ¹  I would wear it proudly ²  on my shoulder, I would bind ³  it on me like a crown;

¹ “The wings of the ostrich ²  flap with joy, ³  but are they the pinions and plumage of a stork? ⁴ 

Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods, for in the thing in which they dealt proudly against them he has destroyed them.” ¹ 

Don’t keep speaking so arrogantly, ¹  letting proud talk come out of your mouth! For the Lord is a God who knows; he ²  evaluates what people do.

I have given orders to my chosen soldiers; ¹  I have summoned the warriors through whom I will vent my anger, ²  my boasting, arrogant ones. ³ 

so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” ¹ 

And when his mind ¹  became arrogant ²  and his spirit filled with pride, he was deposed from his royal throne and his honor was removed from him.

“But they – our ancestors ¹  – behaved presumptuously; they rebelled ²  and did not obey your commandments.

then he reveals ¹  to them what they have done, ²  and their transgressions, that they were behaving proudly.

May lying lips be silenced – lips ¹  that speak defiantly against the innocent ²  with arrogance and contempt!

Those who anticipate my defeat ¹  attack me all day long. Indeed, ²  many are fighting against me, O Exalted One. ³ 

The people will treat each other harshly; men will oppose each other; neighbors will fight. ¹  Youths will proudly defy the elderly and riffraff will challenge those who were once respected. ² 

Therefore the Lord says this: “Look, I am devising disaster for this nation! ¹  It will be like a yoke from which you cannot free your neck. ²  You will no longer ³  walk proudly, for it will be a time of catastrophe.

for he stretches out his hand against God, ¹  and vaunts himself ²  against the Almighty,

Do you make it leap ¹  like a locust? Its proud neighing ²  is terrifying!

They mock ¹  and say evil things; ²  they proudly threaten violence. ³ 

The Beloved about Her Lover: I am my beloved’s, and he desires me! ¹ 

So then, no more boasting about mere mortals! ¹  For everything belongs to you,

You performed awesome signs ¹  against Pharaoh, against his servants, and against all the people of his land, for you knew that the Egyptians ²  had acted presumptuously ³  against them. You made for yourself a name that is celebrated to this day.
