or else he might find you asleep when he returns suddenly.

lest you give your vigor ¹  to others and your years to a cruel person,

Be careful not to make ¹  a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it become a snare ²  among you.

lest they drink and forget what is decreed, and remove ¹  from all the poor ²  their legal rights. ³
