His victims are crushed and beaten down; they are trapped in his sturdy nets. ¹ 

He waits in ambush near the villages; ¹  in hidden places he kills the innocent. His eyes look for some unfortunate victim. ² 

When ¹  he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were bewildered and helpless, ²  like sheep without a shepherd.

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

The people cry out, ¹  “We have heard reports about them! We have become helpless with fear! ²  Anguish grips us, agony like that of a woman giving birth to a baby!

The king of Babylon will become paralyzed with fear ¹  when he hears news of their coming. ²  Anguish will grip him, agony like that of a woman giving birth to a baby. ³ 

Rise up, Lord! ¹  O God, strike him down! ²  Do not forget the oppressed!

He lies in ambush in a hidden place, like a lion in a thicket; ¹  he lies in ambush, waiting to catch ²  the oppressed; he catches the oppressed ³  by pulling in his net. ⁴ 

You have taken notice, ¹  for ²  you always see ³  one who inflicts pain and suffering. ⁴  The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you; ⁵  you deliver ⁶  the fatherless. ⁷ 

I am oppressed and have been on the verge of death since my youth. ¹  I have been subjected to your horrors and am numb with pain. ² 

If you see the donkey of someone who hates you fallen under its load, you must not ignore him, ¹  but be sure to help ²  him with it. ³ 

In the shadows of the walls of Heshbon those trying to escape will stand helpless. For a fire will burst forth from Heshbon. Flames will shoot out from the former territory of Sihon. They will burn the foreheads of the people of Moab, the skulls of those war-loving people. ¹ 

if ¹  we are being examined ²  today for a good deed ³  done to a sick man – by what means this man was healed ⁴  –

Thus the poor have hope, and iniquity ¹  shuts its mouth. ² 

Is ¹  not my power to help myself nothing, and has not every resource ²  been driven from me?

They turn the needy from the pathway, and the poor of the land hide themselves together. ¹ 

They destroy ¹  my path; they succeed in destroying me ²  without anyone assisting ³  them.

Rescue the poor and needy! Deliver them from the power ¹  of the wicked!

May they be humiliated and continually terrified! ¹  May they die in shame! ² 

The Lord protects ¹  the untrained; ²  I was in serious trouble ³  and he delivered me.
