A foolish child is a grief ¹  to his father, and bitterness to the mother who bore him. ² 

Though he causes us ¹  grief, he then has compassion on us ²  according to the abundance of his loyal kindness. ³ 

Even in laughter the heart may ache, ¹  and the end ²  of joy may be ³  grief.

They caused Isaac and Rebekah great anxiety. ¹

The Proverbs of Solomon: A wise child ²  makes a father rejoice, ³  but a foolish child ⁴  is a grief to his mother. ⁵ 

“And you, son of man, groan with an aching heart ¹  and bitterness; groan before their eyes.

Have mercy on me, for I am in distress! My eyes grow dim ¹  from suffering. ²  I have lost my strength. ³ 

I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. ¹ 

For sadness as intended by God produces a repentance that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly sadness brings about death.

“Oh, ¹  if only my grief ²  could be weighed, ³  and my misfortune laid ⁴  on the scales too! ⁵ 

My eyes have grown dim ¹  with grief; my whole frame ²  is but a shadow.

When ¹  he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, exhausted ²  from grief.

For all day long ¹  his work produces pain and frustration, ²  and even at night his mind cannot relax! ³  This also is futile!

For they harass ¹  the one whom you discipline; ²  they spread the news about the suffering of those whom you punish. ³ 

What my eyes see ¹  grieves me ²  – all the suffering of the daughters in my city. ³ 

I collapse ¹  from grief. Sustain me by your word! ² 

The day you begin cultivating, you do what you can to make it grow; ¹  the morning you begin planting, you do what you can to make it sprout. Yet the harvest will disappear ²  in the day of disease and incurable pain.
