Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for fresh game, ¹  but Rebekah loved ²  Jacob.

Therefore, take your weapons – your quiver and your bow – and go out into the open fields and hunt down some wild game ¹  for me.

Now Rebekah had been listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. ¹  When Esau went out to the open fields to hunt down some wild game and bring it back, ² 

‘Bring me some wild game and prepare for me some tasty food. Then I will eat ¹  it and bless you ²  in the presence of the Lord ³  before I die.’

The lazy person does not roast ¹  his prey, but personal possessions ²  are precious to the diligent.

Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau, your firstborn. I’ve done as you told me. Now sit up ¹  and eat some of my wild game so that you can bless me.” ² 

He also prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Esau ¹  said to him, “My father, get up ²  and eat some of your son’s wild game. Then you can bless me.” ³ 

Isaac ¹  said, “Bring some of the wild game for me to eat, my son. ²  Then I will bless you.” ³  So Jacob ⁴  brought it to him, and he ate it. He also brought him wine, and Isaac ⁵  drank.

Isaac began to shake violently ¹  and asked, “Then who else hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it just before you arrived, and I blessed him. ²  He will indeed be blessed!”

You shine brightly and reveal your majesty, as you descend from the hills where you killed your prey. ¹ 

who delight ¹  in doing ²  evil, ³  they rejoice in perverse evil; ⁴ 

The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, ¹ 

For everyone who asks ¹  receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Like ¹  wild donkeys in the desert they ²  go out to their labor, ³  seeking diligently for food; the wasteland provides ⁴  food for them and for their children.

You terrified the nations with your battle cry; ¹  you destroyed the wicked; ²  you permanently wiped out all memory of them. ³ 

“To ¹  what should I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to one another, ² 

For everyone who asks ¹  receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door ²  will be opened.

But ¹  when a stronger man ²  attacks ³  and conquers him, he takes away the first man’s ⁴  armor on which the man relied ⁵  and divides up ⁶  his plunder. ⁷ 

If someone thinks he is religious yet does not bridle his tongue, and so deceives his heart, his religion is futile.

Their eyes, ¹  full of adultery, ²  never stop sinning; ³  they entice ⁴  unstable people. ⁵  They have trained their hearts for greed, these cursed children! ⁶
