For the creation was subjected to futility – not willingly but because of God ¹  who subjected it – in hope

For with great wisdom comes ¹  great frustration; whoever increases his ²  knowledge merely ³  increases his ⁴  heartache.

I was stone silent; ¹  I held back the urge to speak. ²  My frustration grew; ³ 

What the righteous desire ¹  leads ²  only to good, but what the wicked hope for ³  leads ⁴  to wrath.

Surely, he ate in darkness every day of his life, ¹  and he suffered greatly with sickness and anger.

For in this earthly house ¹  we groan, because we desire to put on ²  our heavenly dwelling,

Later Reuben returned to the cistern to find that Joseph was not in it! ¹  He tore his clothes,

My eyes grow weak because of oppression. I call out to you, O Lord, all day long; I spread out my hands in prayer to you. ¹ 

When the wicked ¹  see this, they will worry; they will grind their teeth in frustration ²  and melt away; the desire of the wicked will perish. ³ 

For all day long ¹  his work produces pain and frustration, ²  and even at night his mind cannot relax! ³  This also is futile!

I wish I could be with you now and change my tone of voice, ¹  because I am perplexed about you.

“The Lord will send on you a curse, confusing you and opposing you ¹  in everything you undertake ²  until you are destroyed and quickly perish because of the evil of your deeds, in that you have forsaken me. ³ 

I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble and suffering, ¹  but take courage ²  – I have conquered the world.” ³ 

For I am afraid that somehow when I come I will not find you what I wish, and you will find me ¹  not what you wish. I am afraid that ²  somehow there may be quarreling, jealousy, intense anger, selfish ambition, ³  slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder.
