“‘You must not steal, you must not tell lies, and you must not deal falsely with your fellow citizen. ¹ 

These people make promises in the name of the Lord. ¹  But the fact is, ²  what they swear to is really a lie.” ³ 

You must not swear falsely ¹  in my name, so that you do not profane ²  the name of your God. I am the Lord.

“Blessed are you when people ¹  insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely ²  on account of me.

or has found something lost and denies it and swears falsely ¹  concerning any one of the things that someone might do to sin ²  –

O Timothy, protect what has been entrusted to you. Avoid ¹  the profane chatter and absurdities ²  of so-called “knowledge.” ³ 

or anything about which he swears falsely. ¹  He must restore it in full ²  and add one fifth to it; he must give it to its owner when he is found guilty. ³ 

They are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so. ¹  But I did not send them. I, the Lord, affirm it!’ ² 

The judges will thoroughly investigate the matter, and if the witness should prove to be false and to have given false testimony against the accused, ¹ 

“That is because, from the least important to the most important of them, all of them are greedy for dishonest gain. Prophets and priests alike, all of them practice deceit.

You steal. ¹  You murder. You commit adultery. You lie when you swear on oath. You sacrifice to the god Baal. You pay allegiance to ²  other gods whom you have not previously known.

“You shall not give ¹  false testimony ²  against your neighbor.

You must not offer false testimony against another. ¹ 

The prophets prophesy lies. The priests exercise power by their own authority. ¹  And my people love to have it this way. But they will not be able to help you when the time of judgment comes! ² 

All this has happened to us, even though we have not rejected you ¹  or violated your covenant with us. ² 

Like cloudy skies and wind that produce no rain, ¹  so is the one who boasts ²  of a gift not given. ³ 

He said, “Certainly they will be my people, children who are not disloyal.” ¹  He became their deliverer.

But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, “Do not do that ¹  because what you are saying about Ishmael is not true.” ² 

“I will send it out,” says the Lord who rules over all, “and it will enter the house of the thief and of the person who swears falsely in my name. It will land in the middle of his house and destroy both timber and stones.”

“Again, you have heard that it was said to an older generation, ¹  ‘Do not break an oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.’ ²
