From ¹  the elder, ²  to Gaius ³  my dear brother, whom I love in truth. ⁴ 

Do not accept an accusation against an elder unless it can be confirmed by two or three witnesses. ¹ 

¹  it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger,” ² 

So as your fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings and as one who shares in the glory that will be revealed, I urge the elders among you:

the mighty men and warriors, judges and prophets, omen readers and leaders, ¹ 

From ¹  the elder, ²  to an elect lady ³  and her children, whom I love in truth ⁴  (and not I alone, but also all those ⁵  who know the truth),

(Now Laban had two daughters; ¹  the older one was named Leah, and the younger one Rachel.

Oholah was the name of the older and Oholibah ¹  the name of her younger sister. They became mine, and gave birth to sons and daughters. ²  Oholah is Samaria and Oholibah is Jerusalem.

The leaders and the highly respected people ¹  are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail.

And sons were also born ¹  to Shem (the older brother of Japheth), ²  the father of all the sons of Eber.

Your older sister was Samaria, who lived north ¹  of you with her daughters, and your younger sister, who lived south ²  of you, was Sodom ³  with her daughters.

An elder must be blameless, ¹  the husband of one wife, ²  with faithful children ³  who cannot be charged with dissipation or rebellion.

Then Rebekah took her older son Esau’s best clothes, which she had with her in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob.

When Rebekah heard what her older son Esau had said, ¹  she quickly summoned ²  her younger son Jacob and told him, “Look, your brother Esau is planning to get revenge by killing you. ³ 

The people will treat each other harshly; men will oppose each other; neighbors will fight. ¹  Youths will proudly defy the elderly and riffraff will challenge those who were once respected. ² 

Then you will remember your conduct, and be ashamed when you receive your older and younger sisters. I will give them to you as daughters, but not on account of my covenant with you.

and the Lord said to her, “Two nations ¹  are in your womb, and two peoples will be separated from within you. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”

You must stand up in the presence of the aged, honor the presence of an elder, and fear your God. I am the Lord.
