They grope about in darkness ¹  without light; he makes them stagger ²  like drunkards.

They swayed ¹  and staggered like a drunk, and all their skill proved ineffective. ² 

Surely they will be totally consumed ¹  like ²  entangled thorn bushes, ³  like the drink of drunkards, ⁴  like very ⁵  dry stubble.

and he begins to beat his fellow slaves and to eat and drink with drunkards,

Here is what the Lord says concerning the false prophets: ²  My heart and my mind are deeply disturbed. I tremble all over. ³  I am like a drunk person, like a person who has had too much wine, ⁴  because of the way the Lord and his holy word are being mistreated. ⁵ 

But then the Lord awoke from his sleep; ¹  he was like a warrior in a drunken rage. ² 

You too will act like drunkards; ¹  you will go into hiding; ²  you too will seek refuge from the enemy.

So listen to this, oppressed one, who is drunk, but not from wine!

He has given me my fill of bitter herbs and made me drunk with bitterness. ¹ 

For those who sleep, sleep at night and those who get drunk are drunk at night.

The Lord has made them undiscerning; ¹  they lead Egypt astray in all she does, so that she is like a drunk sliding around in his own vomit. ² 

Babylonia had been a gold cup in the Lord’s hand. She had made the whole world drunk. The nations had drunk from the wine of her wrath. ¹  So they have all gone mad. ² 

When Noah awoke from his drunken stupor ¹  he learned ²  what his youngest son had done ³  to him.

So he ¹  said to her, “How often do you intend to get drunk? Put away your wine!”

Now Hannah was speaking from her heart. Although her lips were moving, her voice was inaudible. Eli therefore thought she was drunk.

“Moab has vaunted itself against me. So make him drunk with the wine of my wrath ¹  until he splashes ²  around in his own vomit, until others treat him as a laughingstock.

“You who force your neighbor to drink wine ¹  are as good as dead ²  – you who make others intoxicated by forcing them to drink from the bowl of your furious anger, ³  so you can look at their genitals. ⁴ 

Sober up as you should, and stop sinning! For some have no knowledge of God – I say this to your shame!

The Babylonians are all like lions roaring for prey. They are like lion cubs growling for something to eat. ¹
