They come in as through a wide breach; amid the crash ¹  they come rolling in. ² 

On that day,” says the Lord, “a loud cry will go up ¹  from the Fish Gate, ²  wailing from the city’s newer district, ³  and a loud crash ⁴  from the hills.

¹ Certainly you must have heard! ²  Long ago I worked it out, in ancient times I planned ³  it, and now I am bringing it to pass. The plan is this: Fortified cities will crash into heaps of ruins. ⁴ 

Your thunderous voice was heard in the wind; the lightning bolts lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook. ¹ 

So this sin will become your downfall. You will be like a high wall that bulges and cracks and is ready to collapse; it crumbles suddenly, in a flash. ¹ 

I see ¹  one destruction after another taking place, so that the whole land lies in ruins. I see our ²  tents suddenly destroyed, their ³  curtains torn down in a mere instant. ⁴ 

The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, and it collapsed; it was utterly destroyed!” ¹ 

The righteous see their destruction ¹  and rejoice; the innocent mock them scornfully, ²  saying,

Surely ¹  you put them in slippery places; you bring them down ²  to ruin.

Your shout made the waters retreat; at the sound of your thunderous voice they hurried off –

Pride ¹  goes ²  before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. ³ 

Before destruction the heart ¹  of a person is proud, but humility comes ²  before honor. ³

when its waves ¹  crash ²  and foam, and the mountains shake ³  before the surging sea. ⁴  (Selah)

You calm the raging seas ¹  and their roaring waves, as well as the commotion made by the nations. ² 

The wild boars of the forest ruin it; ¹  the insects ²  of the field feed on it.

The waves ¹  roar, O Lord, the waves roar, the waves roar and crash. ² 

The hope ¹  of the righteous is joy, but the expectation of the wicked will remain unfulfilled. ² 

Now the coastlands will tremble on the day of your fall; the coastlands by the sea will be terrified by your passing.’ ¹ 

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud ¹  over the miseries that are coming on you.
