Then Daniel went to his home and informed his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the matter.

He ¹  said to them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry –

The ¹  city was filled with the uproar, ²  and the crowd ³  rushed to the theater ⁴  together, ⁵  dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, the Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions.

You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness. So God, your God, has anointed you over your companions ¹  with the oil of rejoicing.” ² 

For the sake of my brothers and my neighbors I will say, “May there be peace in you!”

You love ¹  justice and hate evil. ²  For this reason God, your God ³  has anointed you ⁴  with the oil of joy, ⁵  elevating you above your companions. ⁶ 

Then Paul and his companions put out to sea ¹  from Paphos ²  and came to Perga ³  in Pamphylia, ⁴  but John ⁵  left them and returned to Jerusalem. ⁶ 

The Beloved to Her Lover: Tell me, O you whom my heart ¹  loves, where do you pasture your sheep? Where do you rest your sheep during the midday heat? Tell me lest ²  I wander around ³  beside the flocks of your companions!

Your officials are rebels, ¹  they associate with ²  thieves. All of them love bribery, and look for ³  payoffs. ⁴  They do not take up the cause of the orphan, ⁵  or defend the rights of the widow. ⁶ 

You cause my friends and neighbors to keep their distance; ¹  those who know me leave me alone in the darkness. ² 

I ¹  will reply to you, ²  and to your friends with you.

So a decree went out, and the wise men were about ¹  to be executed. They also sought ²  Daniel and his friends so that they could be executed.

He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry –

“As for you, son of man, take one branch, and write on it, ‘For Judah, and for the Israelites associated with him.’ Then take another branch and write on it, ‘For Joseph, the branch of Ephraim and all the house of Israel associated with him.’

Because of my condition, ¹  even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; ²  my neighbors stand far away. ³ 

Jesus ¹  answered them, ²  “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry –
