at the scent ¹  of water it will flourish ²  and put forth ³  shoots like a new plant.

(Now the ¹  flax and the barley were struck ²  by the hail, ³  for the barley had ripened ⁴  and the flax ⁵  was in bud.

¹ The rain and snow fall from the sky and do not return, but instead water the earth and make it produce and yield crops, and provide seed for the planter and food for those who must eat.

They sow the wind, and so they will reap the whirlwind! The stalk does not have any standing grain; it will not produce any flour. Even if it were to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it all up.

It will produce thorns and thistles for you, but you will eat the grain ¹  of the field.

A shoot will grow out of Jesse’s ¹  root stock, a bud will sprout ²  from his roots.

By itself the soil produces a crop, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head.

On the vine there were three branches. As it budded, its blossoms opened and its clusters ripened into grapes.
