On a day determined in advance, Herod ¹  put on his royal robes, ²  sat down on the judgment seat, ³  and made a speech ⁴  to them.

Tell us what we should ¹  say to him. We cannot prepare a case ²  because of the darkness.

“At that time,” ¹  declares the Lord, “you will call, ²  ‘My husband’; ³  you will never again call me, ⁴  ‘My master.’ ⁵ 

So, brothers and sisters, ¹  I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but instead as people of the flesh, ²  as infants in Christ.

“The Levites will call out to every Israelite ¹  with a loud voice:

For the music director; according to the tune of “Lilies;” ²  by the Korahites, a well-written poem, ³  a love song. My heart is stirred by a beautiful song. ⁴  I say, “I have composed this special song ⁵  for the king; my tongue is as skilled as the stylus of an experienced scribe.” ⁶ 

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,

And if you address as Father the one who impartially judges according to each one’s work, live out the time of your temporary residence here ¹  in reverence.

As you move forward for battle, the priest ¹  will approach and say to the soldiers, ² 

Then call, ¹  and I will answer, or I will speak, and you respond to me.

When ¹  Jesus finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed by his teaching,

And call no one your ‘father’ on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.

You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and do so correctly, ¹  for that is what I am. ² 

Do not address an older man harshly ¹  but appeal to him as a father. Speak to younger men as brothers, ² 

Their grave becomes their permanent residence, their eternal dwelling place. ¹  They name their lands after themselves, ² 

While I listened, he said to the others, ¹  “Go through the city after him and strike people down; do no let your eye pity nor spare ²  anyone!

like Sarah who obeyed ¹  Abraham, calling him lord. You become her children ²  when you do what is good and have no fear in doing so. ³ 

Moreover, the officers are to say to the troops, ¹  “Who among you ²  has built a new house and not dedicated ³  it? He may go home, lest he die in battle and someone else ⁴  dedicate it.

Tell the whole community of Israel, ‘In the tenth day of this month they each ¹  must take a lamb ²  for themselves according to their families ³  – a lamb for each household. ⁴ 

Then Moses said, “This is how ¹  you will know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them of my own will. ²
