Terrors ¹  frighten him on all sides and dog ²  his every step.

Terrors overwhelm him like a flood; ¹  at night a whirlwind carries him off.

How desolate they become in a mere moment! Terrifying judgments make their demise complete! ¹ 

For all of them, ¹  the morning is to them like deep darkness; they are friends with the terrors of darkness.

My heart beats violently ¹  within me; the horrors of death overcome me. ² 

Your anger overwhelms me; ¹  your terrors destroy me.

He is dragged from the security of his tent, ¹  and marched off ²  to the king ³  of terrors.

I am oppressed and have been on the verge of death since my youth. ¹  I have been subjected to your horrors and am numb with pain. ² 

For the arrows ¹  of the Almighty ²  are within me; my spirit ³  drinks their poison; ⁴  God’s sudden terrors ⁵  are arrayed ⁶  against me.

When he pulls it out ¹  and it comes out of his back, the gleaming point ²  out of his liver, terrors come over him.

Terrors are turned loose ¹  on me; they drive away ²  my honor like the wind, and like a cloud my deliverance has passed away.

ת (Tav) As if it were a feast day, you call ¹  enemies ²  to terrify me ³  on every side. ⁴  On the day of the Lord’s anger no one escaped or survived. My enemy has finished off those healthy infants whom I bore ⁵  and raised. ⁶ 

I will bring terrors on you, and you will be no more! Though you are sought after, you will never be found again, declares the sovereign Lord.”

The ropes of death tightened around me, ¹  the snares ²  of Sheol confronted me. I was confronted ³  with trouble and sorrow.

All of them are skilled with a sword, ¹  well-trained in the art of warfare. ²  Each has his sword at his side, to guard against the terrors of the night.

Cry out and moan, son of man, for it is wielded against my people; against all the princes of Israel. They are delivered up to the sword, along with my people. Therefore, strike your thigh. ¹ 

Terrifying sounds fill ¹  his ears; in a time of peace marauders ²  attack him.

You need not fear the terrors of the night, ¹  the arrow that flies by day,

and they are afraid of heights and the dangers ¹  in the street; the almond blossoms ²  grow white, ³  and the grasshopper ⁴  drags itself along, ⁵  and the caper berry ⁶  shrivels up ⁷  – because man goes to his eternal home, ⁸  and the mourners go about in the streets –

The traders among the peoples hiss at you; you have become a horror, and will be no more.’”
