They had 736 horses, 245 mules,

not counting their 7,337 male and female servants. They also had 245 male and female singers.

They will never follow a stranger, ¹  but will run away from him, because they do not recognize ²  the stranger’s voice.” ³ 

for a prostitute is like ¹  a deep pit; a harlot ²  is like ³  a narrow well. ⁴

Do not lay hands on anyone ¹  hastily and so identify with the sins of others. ²  Keep yourself pure.

And he did not enter to offer ¹  himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the sanctuary year after year with blood that is not his own,

quenched raging fire, ¹  escaped the edge of the sword, gained strength in weakness, ²  became mighty in battle, put foreign armies to flight,

‘How ¹  beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, and your dwelling places, O Israel!

The Lord alone was guiding him, ¹  no foreign god was with him.

They made him jealous with other gods, ¹  they enraged him with abhorrent idols. ² 

Foreigners lose their courage; ¹  they shake with fear ²  as they leave ³  their strongholds. ⁴
