and said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, because he has seizures ¹  and suffers terribly, for he often falls into the fire and into the water.

But ¹  they have no root in themselves and do not endure. ²  Then, when trouble or persecution comes because of the word, immediately they fall away.

And in hell, ¹  as he was in torment, ²  he looked up ³  and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side. ⁴ 

(for I have five brothers) to warn ¹  them so that they don’t come ²  into this place of torment.’

especially saddened ¹  by what ²  he had said, that they were not going to see him ³  again. Then they accompanied ⁴  him to the ship.

that ¹  the Christ ²  was to suffer and be the first to rise from the dead, to proclaim light both to our people ³  and to the Gentiles.” ⁴ 

For I consider that our present sufferings cannot even be compared ¹  to the glory that will be revealed to us.

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will trouble, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? ¹ 

If one member suffers, everyone suffers with it. If a ¹  member is honored, all rejoice with it.

For just as the sufferings ¹  of Christ ²  overflow ³  toward us, so also our comfort through Christ overflows to you. ⁴ 

Now I appeal to God as my witness, ¹  that to spare ²  you I did not come again to Corinth. ³ 

in hard work and toil, ¹  through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, many times without food, in cold and without enough clothing. ² 

The former proclaim Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, because they think they can cause trouble for me in my imprisonment. ¹ 

For it has been granted to you ¹  not only to believe in Christ but also to suffer for him,

This is evidence of God’s righteous judgment, to make you worthy ¹  of the kingdom of God, for which in fact you are suffering.

But she will be delivered through childbearing, ¹  if she ²  continues in faith and love and holiness with self-control.

For the one who enters God’s ¹  rest has also rested from his works, just as God did from his own works.

They were stoned, sawed apart, ¹  murdered with the sword; they went about in sheepskins and goatskins; they were destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

Remember those in prison as though you were in prison with them, ¹  and those ill-treated as though you too felt their torment. ² 

As an example of suffering and patience, brothers and sisters, ¹  take the prophets who spoke in the Lord’s name.
