The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed in his ancestor ¹  David’s footsteps at the beginning of his reign. ²  He did not seek the Baals,

but instead sought the God of his ancestors ¹  and obeyed ²  his commands, unlike the Israelites. ³ 

He followed in his father Asa’s footsteps and was careful to do what the Lord approved. ¹ 

Uzziah built and fortified towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, Valley Gate, and at the Angle. ¹ 

I continued up the valley during the night, inspecting the wall. Then I turned back and came to the Valley Gate, and so returned.

If I lie down, I say, ¹  ‘When will I arise?’, and the night stretches on ²  and I toss and turn restlessly ³  until the day dawns.

In the north ¹  when he is at work, ²  I do not see him; ³  when he turns ⁴  to the south, I see no trace of him.

That person sings ¹  to others, ²  saying: ‘I have sinned and falsified what is right, but I was not punished according to what I deserved. ³ 

You men, ¹  how long will you try to turn my honor into shame? ²  How long ³  will you love what is worthless ⁴  and search for what is deceptive? ⁵  (Selah)

But as for me, ¹  because of your great faithfulness I will enter your house; ²  I will bow down toward your holy temple as I worship you. ³ 

He despises a reprobate, ¹  but honors the Lord’s loyal followers. ²  He makes firm commitments and does not renege on his promise. ³ 

My God, I cry out during the day, but you do not answer, and during the night my prayers do not let up. ¹ 

As smoke is driven away by the wind, so you drive them away. ¹  As wax melts before fire, so the wicked are destroyed before God.

I will not even consider doing what is dishonest. ¹  I hate doing evil; ²  I will have no part of it. ³ 

He covers ¹  the sky with clouds, provides the earth with rain, and causes grass to grow on the hillsides. ² 

Do not turn ¹  to the right or to the left; turn yourself ²  away from evil. ³ 

But if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured ¹  by the sword.” Know for certain that the Lord has spoken. ² 

Look, the Lord is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants.

Turn aside from the way, stray off the path. ¹  Remove from our presence the Holy One of Israel.” ² 

What can I say? He has decreed and acted. ¹  I will walk slowly all my years because I am overcome with grief. ²
