In those days the Lord began to reduce the size of Israel’s territory. ¹  Hazael attacked their eastern border. ² 

He followed in his father Asa’s footsteps and was careful to do what the Lord approved. ¹ 

Surely people go through life as mere ghosts. ¹  Surely they accumulate worthless wealth without knowing who will eventually haul it away.” ² 

He brings an end to wars throughout the earth; ¹  he shatters ²  the bow and breaks ³  the spear; he burns ⁴  the shields with fire. ⁵ 

When the wicked ¹  see this, they will worry; they will grind their teeth in frustration ²  and melt away; the desire of the wicked will perish. ³ 

A benevolent ¹  person leaves an inheritance ²  for his grandchildren, ³  but the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous. ⁴ 

The king’s heart ¹  is in the hand ²  of the Lord like channels of water; ³  he turns it wherever he wants.

They come from a distant land, from the horizon. ¹  It is the Lord with his instruments of judgment, ²  coming to destroy the whole earth. ³ 

The officials of Zoan are fools, the officials of Memphis ¹  are misled; the rulers ²  of her tribes lead Egypt astray.

You have made the nation larger, ¹  O Lord, you have made the nation larger and revealed your splendor, ²  you have extended all the borders of the land.

Israel will be delivered once and for all by the Lord; ¹  you will never again be ashamed or humiliated. ² 

When your products went out from the seas, you satisfied many peoples; with the abundance of your wealth and merchandise you enriched the kings of the earth.

“‘They must not shave their heads ¹  nor let their hair grow long; ²  they must only trim their heads.

The tree that you saw that grew large and strong, whose top reached to the sky, and which could be seen ¹  in all the land,

because the outlook of the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so.

For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever! Amen.

And just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, let us also bear ¹  the image of the man of heaven.

Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition ¹  or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself.
