all the rest of the bull ¹  – he must bring outside the camp ²  to a ceremonially clean place, ³  to the fatty ash pile, ⁴  and he must burn ⁵  it on a wood fire; it must be burned on the fatty ash pile.

Elijah then told all the people, “Approach me.” So all the people approached him. He repaired the altar of the Lord that had been torn down. ¹ 

They have burned the gods of the nations, ¹  for they are not really gods, but only the product of human hands manufactured from wood and stone. That is why the Assyrians could destroy them. ² 

The messengers ¹  scurried forth ²  with the king’s order. ³  The edict was issued in Susa the citadel. While the king and Haman sat down to drink, the city of Susa was in an uproar! ⁴ 

and they brought Uriah back from there. ¹  They took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him executed and had his body thrown into the burial place of the common people. ² 

“King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon devoured me and drove my people out. Like a monster from the deep he swallowed me. He filled his belly with my riches. He made me an empty dish. He completely cleaned me out.” ¹ 

If ¹  our God whom we are serving exists, ²  he is able to rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire, and he will rescue us, O king, from your power as well.

“Then I kept on watching because of the arrogant words of the horn that was speaking. I was watching ¹  until the beast was killed and its body destroyed and thrown into ²  the flaming fire.

It also acted arrogantly against the Prince of the army, ¹  from whom ²  the daily sacrifice was removed and whose sanctuary ³  was thrown down.

The women singing in the temple ¹  will wail in that day.” The sovereign Lord is speaking. “There will be many corpses littered everywhere! ²  Be quiet!”

No one can withstand ¹  his indignation! ²  No one can resist ³  his fierce anger! ⁴  His wrath is poured out like volcanic fire, boulders are broken up ⁵  as he approaches. ⁶ 

“And now what are we able to say after this, our God? For we have forsaken your commandments

Moreover, this will become my deliverance, for no godless person would come before him. ¹ 

My offenses would be sealed up ¹  in a bag; ²  you would cover over ³  my sin.

God abandons me to evil ¹  men, ²  and throws ³  me into the hands of wicked men.

His troops ¹  advance together; they throw up ²  a siege ramp against me, and they camp around my tent.

he will perish forever, like his own excrement; ¹  those who used to see him will say, ‘Where is he?’

Because God has untied ¹  my tent cord and afflicted me, people throw off all restraint in my presence. ² 

(41:1) ¹  See, his expectation is wrong, ²  he is laid low even at the sight of it. ³ 

He raises the poor from the dirt, and lifts up the needy from the garbage pile, ¹
