I predestine you to die by the sword, ¹  all of you will kneel down at the slaughtering block, ²  because I called to you, and you did not respond, I spoke and you did not listen. You did evil before me; ³  you chose to do what displeases me.”

Then Jonathan gave his equipment to the servant who was with him. He said to him, “Go, take these things back to the city.”

Let all the people of the earth acknowledge the Lord and turn to him! ¹  Let all the nations ²  worship you! ³ 

Listen to me! ¹  Quickly deliver me! Be my protector and refuge, ²  a stronghold where I can be safe! ³ 

Let them disappear ¹  like water that flows away! ²  Let them wither like grass! ³ 

All who worship idols are ashamed, those who boast about worthless idols. All the gods bow down before him. ¹ 

The people of the land will bow down at the entrance of that gate before the Lord on the Sabbaths and on the new moons.

Those who empty out gold from a purse and weigh out silver on the scale ¹  hire a metalsmith, who makes it into a god. They then bow down and worship it.

God was with the boy as he grew. He lived in the wilderness and became an archer.

You give me strength for battle; ¹  you make my foes kneel before me. ² 

Because God has untied ¹  my tent cord and afflicted me, people throw off all restraint in my presence. ² 

The Ephraimites ¹  were armed with bows, ²  but they retreated in the day of battle. ³

Men bow down to them in homage, they lie flat on the ground in worship. ¹  Don’t spare them! ² 

let their eyes be darkened so that they may not see, and make their backs bend continually.” ¹ 

If you violate the covenantal laws of the Lord your God which he commanded you to keep, ¹  and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods, ²  the Lord will be very angry with you and you will disappear ³  quickly from the good land which he gave to you.”

Listen! ¹  I am going to make those people from the synagogue ²  of Satan – who say they are Jews yet ³  are not, but are lying – Look, I will make ⁴  them come and bow down ⁵  at your feet and acknowledge ⁶  that I have loved you.

Everyone who remains in your house will come to bow before him for a little money ¹  and for a scrap of bread. Each will say, ‘Assign me to a priestly task so I can eat a scrap of bread.’”

Is this really the kind of fasting I want? ¹  Do I want a day when people merely humble themselves, ²  bowing their heads like a reed and stretching out ³  on sackcloth and ashes? Is this really what you call a fast, a day that is pleasing to the Lord?

I will perform a mighty act among them ¹  and then send some of those who remain to the nations – to Tarshish, Pul, ²  Lud ³  (known for its archers ⁴ ), Tubal, Javan, ⁵  and to the distant coastlands ⁶  that have not heard about me or seen my splendor. They will tell the nations of my splendor.
