and rejected Esau. ¹  I turned Esau’s ²  mountains into a deserted wasteland ³  and gave his territory ⁴  to the wild jackals.”

I asked, ¹  “Will the Lord reject me forever? Will he never again show me his favor?

They rejected ¹  the God who delivered them, the one who performed great deeds in Egypt,

They rejected the fruitful land; ¹  they did not believe his promise. ² 

because ¹  you neglected ²  all my advice, and did not comply ³  with my rebuke,

they did not comply with my advice, they spurned ¹  all my rebuke.

I ¹  am deprived ²  of peace; ³  I have forgotten what happiness ⁴  is.

all the clans that remain, each separately with their wives.”

just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” ¹ 

And I hope that you will realize that we have not failed the test! ¹ 

The Levites even left their pasturelands and their property behind and came to Judah and Jerusalem, for Jeroboam and his sons prohibited them from serving as the Lord’s priests.

But you have been thrown out of your grave like a shoot that is thrown away. ¹  You lie among ²  the slain, among those who have been slashed by the sword, among those headed for ³  the stones of the pit, ⁴  as if you were a mangled corpse. ⁵ 

I will go to the leaders ¹  and speak with them. Surely they know what the Lord demands. ²  Surely they know what their God requires of them.” ³  Yet all of them, too, have rejected his authority and refuse to submit to him. ⁴ 

Then tell them that the Lord says, ¹  ‘It is because your ancestors ²  rejected me and paid allegiance to ³  other gods. They have served them and worshiped them. But they have rejected me and not obeyed my law. ⁴ 

He said to them, “Elijah does indeed come first, and restores all things. And why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be despised?

Then ¹  Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “Listen carefully: ²  This child ³  is destined to be the cause of the falling and rising ⁴  of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be rejected. ⁵ 

‘Surely such is the residence ¹  of an evil man; and this is the place of one who has not known God.’” ² 

Surely ¹  those favored by the Lord ²  will possess the land, but those rejected ³  by him will be wiped out. ⁴ 

All this has happened to us, even though we have not rejected you ¹  or violated your covenant with us. ² 

If we had rejected our God, ¹  and spread out our hands in prayer to another god, ²
