But they remained silent. So ¹  Jesus ²  took hold of the man, ³  healed him, and sent him away. ⁴ 

So ¹  Herod ²  questioned him at considerable length; Jesus ³  gave him no answer.

But the magicians of Egypt did the same ¹  by their secret arts, and so ²  Pharaoh’s heart remained hard, ³  and he refused to listen to Moses and Aaron ⁴  – just as the Lord had predicted.

But King Sihon of Heshbon was unwilling to allow us to pass near him because the Lord our ¹  God had made him obstinate ²  and stubborn ³  so that he might deliver him over to you ⁴  this very day.

But some wicked men ¹  said, “How can this man save us?” They despised him and did not even bring him a gift. But Saul said nothing about it. ² 

The Lord rewards each man for his integrity and loyalty. ¹  Even though today the Lord delivered you into my hand, I was not willing to extend my hand against the Lord’s chosen one.

But she said to him, “No I won’t, for sending me away now would be worse than what you did to me earlier!” ¹  But he refused to listen to her.

At that time Menahem came from Tirzah and attacked Tiphsah. He struck down all who lived in the city and the surrounding territory, because they would not surrender. ¹  He even ripped open the pregnant women.

This happened because they did not obey ¹  the Lord their God and broke his agreement with them. ²  They did not pay attention to and obey all that Moses, the Lord’s servant, had commanded. ³ 

And after they had spoken to him day after day ¹  without his paying any attention to them, they informed Haman to see whether this attitude on Mordecai’s part would be permitted. ²  Furthermore, he had disclosed to them that he was a Jew. ³ 

Then the king departed to his palace. But he spent the night without eating, and no diversions ¹  were brought to him. He was unable to sleep. ² 

But ¹  Jesus ²  did not permit him to do so. Instead, he said to him, “Go to your home and to your people and tell them what the Lord has done for you, ³  that he had mercy on you.”

Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard, ¹  and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had predicted.

But Pharaoh hardened ¹  his heart this time also and did not release the people.

When the people heard this troubling word ¹  they mourned; ²  no one put on his ornaments.

You were not willing to go up, however, but instead rebelled against the Lord your God. ¹ 

But the Ammonite king disregarded ¹  the message sent by Jephthah. ² 

They cry out, ¹  but there is no one to help them; ²  they cry out to the Lord, ³  but he does not answer them.

He abandoned the Lord God of his ancestors and did not follow the Lord’s instructions. ¹ 

“But they – our ancestors ¹  – behaved presumptuously; they rebelled ²  and did not obey your commandments.
