When the righteous do well, ¹  the city rejoices; ²  when the wicked perish, there is joy.

The Beloved to Her Lover: ¹  Oh, how I wish you ²  would kiss me passionately! ³  For your lovemaking ⁴  is more delightful ⁵  than wine. ⁶ 

The happy sound ¹  of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases.

The people of the earth will quake when they hear Babylon has been captured. Her cries of anguish will be heard by the other nations.” ¹ 

Cries of anguish will come from Babylon, the sound of great destruction from the land of the Babylonians.

In all the vineyards there will be wailing, for I will pass through ¹  your midst,” says the Lord.

‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; ¹  we wailed in mourning, ²  yet you did not weep.’

He will not quarrel or cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.

They will throw them into the fiery furnace, ¹  where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

He asked, “Why? What wrong has he done?” But they shouted more insistently, “Crucify him!”

But they covered their ears, ¹  shouting out with a loud voice, and rushed at him with one intent.

And ¹  yearn ²  like newborn infants for pure, spiritual milk, ³  so that by it you may grow up to ⁴  salvation, ⁵ 

Indeed ¹  Israel ²  is the vineyard of the Lord who commands armies, the people ³  of Judah are the cultivated place in which he took delight. He waited for justice, but look what he got – disobedience! ⁴  He waited for fairness, but look what he got – cries for help! ⁵ 

Because of Israel’s sins ¹  this is what the Lord, the God who commands armies, the sovereign One, ²  says: “In all the squares there will be wailing, in all the streets they will mourn the dead. ³  They will tell the field workers ⁴  to lament and the professional mourners ⁵  to wail.

When he heard me raise ¹  my voice and scream, he left his outer garment beside me and ran outside.”

And now indeed ¹  the cry ²  of the Israelites has come to me, and I have also seen how severely the Egyptians oppress them. ³ 

Then you came back and wept before the Lord, but he ¹  paid no attention to you whatsoever. ² 

The everlasting God is a refuge, and underneath you are his eternal arms; ¹  he has driven out enemies before you, and has said, “Destroy!”
