These are the sons of Shem according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, and according to their nations.

Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, ¹  but Jacob called it Galeed. ² 

(Now ¹  they did not know that Joseph could understand them, ²  for he was speaking through an interpreter.) ³ 

People lie to one another; ¹  they flatter and deceive. ² 

Speaking recklessly ¹  is like the thrusts of a sword, but the words ²  of the wise bring ³  healing. ⁴ 

The one who has a perverse heart ¹  does not find good, ²  and the one who is deceitful in speech ³  falls into trouble.

For with mocking lips and a foreign tongue he will speak to these people. ¹ 

Now ¹  when Jesus ²  had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable.

Why don’t you understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot accept ¹  my teaching. ² 

Then they secretly instigated ¹  some men to say, “We have heard this man ²  speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.”

So you too consider yourselves ¹  dead to sin, but ²  alive to God in Christ Jesus.

thieves, the greedy, drunkards, the verbally abusive, ¹  and swindlers will not inherit the kingdom of God.

You must put away every kind of bitterness, anger, wrath, quarreling, and evil, slanderous talk.

Neither should there be vulgar speech, foolish talk, or coarse jesting – all of which are out of character – but rather thanksgiving.

yet even ¹  angels, who are much more powerful, ²  do not bring a slanderous ³  judgment against them before the Lord. ⁴ 

They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world’s perspective and the world listens to them.

Due to the greatness that he bestowed on him, all peoples, nations, and language groups were trembling with fear ¹  before him. He killed whom he wished, he spared ²  whom he wished, he exalted whom he wished, and he brought low whom he wished.

After these things I looked, and here was ¹  an enormous crowd that no one could count, made up of persons from every nation, tribe, ²  people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb dressed in long white robes, and with palm branches in their hands.

I will bless those who bless you, ¹  but the one who treats you lightly ²  I must curse, and all the families of the earth will bless one another ³  by your name.”
