So the Lord ¹  destroyed ²  every living thing that was on the surface of the ground, including people, animals, creatures that creep along the ground, and birds of the sky. ³  They were wiped off the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark survived. ⁴ 

He mounted ¹  a winged angel ²  and flew; he glided ³  on the wings of the wind. ⁴ 

Then a breath of air ¹  passes ²  by my face; it makes ³  the hair of my flesh stand up.

all flesh would perish together and human beings would return to dust.

They are calloused; ¹  they speak arrogantly. ² 

They speak as if they rule in heaven, and lay claim to the earth. ¹ 

He ordered flies to come; ¹  gnats invaded their whole territory.

The faithful witness ¹  tells what is right, ²  but a false witness ³  speaks ⁴  deceit.

A fool takes no pleasure ¹  in understanding but only in disclosing ²  what is on his mind. ³ 

I said, ¹  “I will weep and mourn ²  for the grasslands on the mountains, ³  I will sing a mournful song for the pastures in the wilderness because they are so scorched no one travels through them. The sound of livestock is no longer heard there. Even the birds in the sky and the wild animals in the fields have fled and are gone.”

They will die of deadly diseases. No one will mourn for them. They will not be buried. Their dead bodies will lie like manure spread on the ground. They will be killed in war or die of starvation. Their corpses will be food for the birds and wild animals.

In this place I will thwart ¹  the plans of the people of Judah and Jerusalem. I will deliver them over to the power of their enemies who are seeking to kill them. They will die by the sword ²  at the hands of their enemies. ³  I will make their dead bodies food for the birds and wild beasts to eat.

“At that time ¹  I will make a covenant for them with the wild animals, the birds of the air, and the creatures that crawl on the ground. I will abolish ²  the warrior’s bow and sword – that is, every weapon of warfare ³  – from the land, and I will allow them to live securely.” ⁴ 

Men are nothing but a mere breath; human beings are unreliable. ¹  When they are weighed in the scales, all of them together are lighter than air. ² 

I will leave you on the ground, I will fling you on the open field, I will allow ¹  all the birds of the sky to settle ²  on you, and I will permit ³  all the wild animals ⁴  to gorge themselves on you.

Wherever human beings, ¹  wild animals, ²  and birds of the sky live – he has given them into your power. ³  He has given you authority over them all. You are the head of gold.

whose foliage was attractive and its fruit plentiful, and from which there was food available for all, under whose branches wild animals ¹  used to live, and in whose branches birds of the sky used to nest –

Do you intend to criticize mere words, and treat ¹  the words of a despairing man as wind?

Remember ¹  that my life is but a breath, that ²  my eyes will never again ³  see happiness.

“Does a wise man answer with blustery knowledge, ¹  or fill his belly ²  with the east wind? ³
