You turn back ¹  his sword from the adversary, ²  and have not sustained him in battle. ³ 

You despise ¹  all who stray from your statutes, for they are deceptive and unreliable. ² 

Egypt is totally incapable of helping. ¹  For this reason I call her ‘Proud one ²  who is silenced.’” ³ 

He is the one who reduces rulers to nothing; he makes the earth’s leaders insignificant.

For this reason whoever is smart ¹  keeps quiet ²  in such a time, for it is an evil ³  time.

And throw that worthless slave into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

“Salt ¹  is good, but if salt loses its flavor, ²  how can its flavor be restored?

All have turned away, together they have become worthless; there is no one who shows kindness, not even one.” ¹ 

Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather ¹  expose them. ² 

For there are many ¹  rebellious people, idle talkers, and deceivers, especially those with Jewish connections, ² 

These men ¹  are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm, for whom the utter depths of darkness ²  have been reserved.

¹ “You say, ²  ‘He is foam ³  on the face of the waters; ⁴  their portion of the land is cursed so that no one goes to their vineyard. ⁵ 

Let them disappear ¹  like water that flows away! ²  Let them wither like grass! ³ 

For he does not think ¹  much about the fleeting ²  days of his life because God keeps him preoccupied ³  with the joy he derives from his activity. ⁴ 

Whatever has happened was foreordained, ¹  and what happens to a person ²  was also foreknown. It is useless for him to argue with God about his fate because God is more powerful than he is. ³ 

For like the crackling of quick-burning thorns ¹  under a cooking pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This kind of folly ²  also is useless. ³ 

all will be put to shame ¹  because of a nation that cannot help them, who cannot give them aid or help, but only shame and disgrace.”

Their webs cannot be used for clothing; they cannot cover themselves with what they make. Their deeds are sinful; they commit violent crimes. ¹ 

Go up to Gilead and get medicinal ointment, ¹  you dear poor people of Egypt. ²  But it will prove useless no matter how much medicine you use; ³  there will be no healing for you.

ע (Ayin) Our eyes continually failed us as we looked in vain for help. ¹  From our watchtowers we watched for a nation that could not rescue us.
