as water wears away stones, and torrents ¹  wash away the soil, ²  so you destroy man’s hope. ³ 

I placed you there with an anointed ¹  guardian ²  cherub; ³  you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked about amidst fiery stones.

The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” ¹
