So also you have sorrow ¹  now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. ² 

And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, when you received ¹  the message with joy that comes from the Holy Spirit, despite great affliction.

You ¹  have enlarged the nation; you give them great joy. ²  They rejoice in your presence as harvesters rejoice; as warriors celebrate ³  when they divide up the plunder.

And I wrote this very thing to you, ¹  so that when I came ²  I would not have sadness from those who ought to make me rejoice, since I am confident in you all that my joy would be yours.

Indeed, this is the joy of his way, ¹  and out of the earth ²  others spring up. ³ 

Let the rivers clap their hands! Let the mountains sing in unison

A person has joy ¹  in giving an appropriate answer, ²  and a word at the right time ³  – how good it is!

Then ¹  the seventy-two ²  returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to ³  us in your name!” ⁴ 

so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company.

Grieve, mourn, ¹  and weep. Turn your laughter ²  into mourning and your joy into despair.

But be happy and rejoice forevermore over what I am about to create! For look, I am ready to create Jerusalem ¹  to be a source of joy, ²  and her people to be a source of happiness. ³ 

May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth, if I do not remember you, and do not give Jerusalem priority over whatever gives me the most joy. ¹ 

You were once abandoned and despised, with no one passing through, but I will make you ¹  a permanent source of pride and joy to coming generations.

For the instant ¹  the sound of your greeting reached my ears, ²  the baby in my womb leaped for joy. ³ 

Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive it, ¹  so that your joy may be complete.

But now I am coming to you, and I am saying these things in the world, so they may experience ¹  my joy completed ²  in themselves.

For the kingdom of God does not consist of food and drink, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

And since I am sure of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for the sake of your progress ¹  and joy in the faith, ² 

For how can we thank God enough for you, ¹  for all the joy we feel ²  because of you before our God?

the blessing of the dying man descended on me, ¹  and I made the widow’s heart rejoice; ²
