These men ¹  are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm, for whom the utter depths of darkness ²  have been reserved.

So I did just as I was commanded. I carried out my belongings packed for exile during the day, and at evening I dug myself a hole through the wall with my hands. I went out in the darkness, carrying my baggage ¹  on my shoulder while they watched.

He replied, “You must take these seven ewe lambs from my hand as legal proof ¹  that I dug this well.” ² 

Then Isaac built an altar there and worshiped ¹  the Lord. He pitched his tent there, and his servants dug a well. ² 

That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. “We’ve found water,” they reported. ¹ 

Later Reuben returned to the cistern to find that Joseph was not in it! ¹  He tore his clothes,

for I really was kidnapped ¹  from the land of the Hebrews and I have done nothing wrong here for which they should put me in a dungeon.”

“If a man opens a pit or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it,

the owner of the pit must repay ¹  the loss. He must give money ²  to its owner, and the dead animal ³  will become his.

The foreigners ¹  who reside among you will become higher and higher over you and you will become lower and lower.

His wife then took the covering and spread it over the top of the well and scattered some grain over it. No one was aware of what she had done.

David was thirsty and said, “How I wish someone would give me some water to drink from the cistern in Bethlehem near the gate!”

Total darkness waits to receive his treasures; ¹  a fire which has not been kindled ²  will consume him and devour what is left in his tent.

The nations fell ¹  into the pit they had made; their feet were caught in the net they had hidden. ² 

Don’t let the current overpower me! Don’t let the deep swallow me up! Don’t let the pit ¹  devour me! ² 

adrift ¹  among the dead, like corpses lying in the grave, whom you remember no more, and who are cut off from your power. ² 

Certainly ¹  my enemies ²  chase me. They smash me into the ground. ³  They force me to live ⁴  in dark regions, ⁵  like those who have been dead for ages.

The mouth ¹  of an adulteress is like ²  a deep pit; ³  the one against whom the Lord is angry ⁴  will fall into it. ⁵ 

The one who digs a pit ¹  will fall into it; the one who rolls a stone – it will come back on him.
