It is not the aged ¹  who are wise, nor old men who understand what is right.

The steps of a person ¹  are ordained by ²  the Lord – so how can anyone ³  understand his own ⁴  way?

Then ¹  he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand.

They do not comprehend or understand, for their eyes are blind and cannot see; their minds do not discern. ¹ 

But these men do not understand the things they slander, and they are being destroyed by the very things that, like irrational animals, they instinctively comprehend. ¹ 

What do you know that we don’t know? What do you understand that we don’t understand? ¹ 

Why don’t you understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot accept ¹  my teaching. ² 

Jesus told them this parable, ¹  but they ²  did not understand ³  what he was saying to them.

I am more discerning than those older than I, for I observe your precepts.

You who are naive, discern ¹  wisdom! And you fools, understand discernment! ² 

(For they did not yet understand ¹  the scripture that Jesus ²  must rise from the dead.) ³ 

Come, let’s go down and confuse ¹  their language so they won’t be able to understand each other.” ² 

He thought his own people ¹  would understand that God was delivering them ²  through him, ³  but they did not understand. ⁴ 

I would know with what words ¹  he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me.

Jesus answered, ¹  “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you don’t understand these things? ² 

When reading this, ¹  you will be able to ²  understand my insight into this secret ³  of Christ.

Indeed, these are but the outer fringes of his ways! ¹  How faint is the whisper ²  we hear of him! But who can understand the thunder of his power?”

He said, “Go and tell these people: ‘Listen continually, but don’t understand! Look continually, but don’t perceive!’

I heard, but I did not understand. So I said, “Sir, ¹  what will happen after these things?”

But they do not know what the Lord is planning; they do not understand his strategy. He has gathered them like stalks of grain to be threshed ¹  at the threshing floor.
