Then he turned from those who were nearby to someone else and asked the same question, ¹  but they ²  gave him the same answer as before.

If it is a matter of strength, ¹  most certainly ²  he is the strong one! And if it is a matter of justice, he will say, ‘Who will summon me?’ ³ 

No one ¹  was able to answer him a word, and from that day on no one dared to question him any longer.

Now we know that you know everything ¹  and do not need anyone ²  to ask you anything. ³  Because of this ⁴  we believe that you have come from God.”

The only thing I want to learn from you is this: Did you receive the Spirit by doing the works of the law ¹  or by believing what you heard? ² 

“For inquire now of the former ¹  generation, and pay attention ²  to the findings ³  of their ancestors; ⁴ 

“The Lord who rules over all says, ‘Ask the priests about the law. ¹ 

So ¹  Herod ²  questioned him at considerable length; Jesus ³  gave him no answer.

Now a dispute came about between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew ¹  concerning ceremonial washing. ² 

Fool! What you sow will not come to life unless it dies.

but since it concerns points of disagreement ¹  about words and names and your own law, settle ²  it yourselves. I will not be ³  a judge of these things!”

If an unbeliever invites you to dinner and you want to go, eat whatever is served without asking questions of conscience.

Then the Pharisees ¹  came and began to argue with Jesus, asking for ²  a sign from heaven ³  to test him.

Then some Pharisees ¹  came, and to test him ²  they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his ³  wife?” ⁴ 

Then ¹  the experts in the law ²  and the Pharisees began to think ³  to themselves, ⁴  “Who is this man ⁵  who is uttering blasphemies? ⁶  Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

He asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”

But ¹  they could not reply ²  to this.

They asked him, ¹  “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies leaving a wife but no children, that man ²  must marry ³  the widow and father children ⁴  for his brother. ⁵ 

(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. ¹ ) ² 

When Jesus perceived ¹  their hostile thoughts, ²  he said to them, ³  “Why are you raising objections ⁴  within yourselves?
