My eyes grow tired as I wait for your deliverance, ¹  for your reliable promise to be fulfilled. ² 

“But as the time drew near for God to fulfill the promise he had declared to Abraham, ¹  the people increased greatly in number ²  in Egypt,

namely, that through the gospel ¹  the Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members ²  of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus.

Although these false teachers promise ¹  such people ²  freedom, they themselves are enslaved to ³  immorality. ⁴  For whatever a person succumbs to, to that he is enslaved. ⁵ 

the promise ¹  he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac! ² 

the promise ¹  he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac!

They rejected the fruitful land; ¹  they did not believe his promise. ² 

This ¹  is what comforts me in my trouble, for your promise revives me. ² 

Now this ¹  is the promise that he ²  himself made to ³  us: eternal life. ⁴ 

My eyes grow tired as I wait for your promise to be fulfilled. ¹  I say, ²  “When will you comfort me?”

In the same way ¹  God wanted to demonstrate more clearly to the heirs of the promise that his purpose was unchangeable, ²  and so he intervened with an oath,

ח (Khet) The Lord is my source of security. ¹  I have determined ²  to follow your instructions. ³ 

My eyes anticipate the nighttime hours, so that I can meditate on your word.

in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles, ¹  so that we could receive the promise of the Spirit by faith.

and saying, ¹  “Where is his promised return? ²  For ever since ³  our ancestors ⁴  died, ⁵  all things have continued as they were ⁶  from the beginning of creation.”

For the promise ¹  to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not fulfilled through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.

What I am saying is this: The law that came four hundred thirty years later does not cancel a covenant previously ratified by God, ¹  so as to invalidate the promise.

Why then was the law given? ¹  It was added ²  because of transgressions, ³  until the arrival of the descendant ⁴  to whom the promise had been made. It was administered ⁵  through angels by an intermediary. ⁶ 

So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.

And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors, ¹
