The Israelites took the women of Midian captives along with their little ones, and took all their herds, all their flocks, and all their goods as plunder.

Why do you remain among the sheepfolds, ¹  listening to the shepherds playing their pipes ²  for their flocks? ³  As for the clans of Reuben – there was intense searching of heart.

They went to the entrance of Gedor, to the east of the valley, looking for pasture for their sheep.

Kings will come against it with their armies. ¹  They will encamp in siege all around it. ²  Each of them will devastate the portion assigned to him. ³ 

Although they bring their flocks and herds ¹  to seek ²  the favor of the Lord, ³  They will not find him – he has withdrawn himself from them!

Jacob removed these lambs, but he made the rest of the flock face ¹  the streaked and completely dark-colored animals in Laban’s flock. So he made separate flocks for himself and did not mix them with Laban’s flocks.

He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Please tell ¹  me where they are grazing their flocks.”

Jaziz the Hagrite was in charge of the sheep. All these were the officials in charge of King David’s property.

But Jacob ¹  said to him, “My lord knows that the children are young, ²  and that I have to look after the sheep and cattle that are nursing their young. ³  If they are driven too hard for even a single day, all the animals will die.

In this way Jacob ¹  became extremely prosperous. He owned ²  large flocks, male and female servants, camels, and donkeys.

They took their flocks, herds, and donkeys, as well as everything in the city and in the surrounding fields. ¹ 

David took all the flocks and herds and drove them in front of the rest of the animals. People were saying, “This is David’s plunder!”

He built royal cities ¹  and owned a large number of sheep and cattle, for God gave him a huge amount of possessions.

The meadows are clothed with sheep, and the valleys are covered with grain. They shout joyfully, yes, they sing.

Listen to the cattle groan! ¹  The herds of livestock wander around in confusion ²  because they have no pasture. Even the flocks of sheep are suffering.

Like the sheep for offerings, like the sheep of Jerusalem ¹  during her appointed feasts, so will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

He made storerooms for the harvest of grain, wine, and olive oil, and stalls for all his various kinds of livestock and his flocks. ¹ 

The cities of Aroer are abandoned. ¹  They will be used for herds, which will lie down there in peace. ² 

I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels and Ammon ¹  a resting place for sheep. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds ¹  would roll the stone off the mouth of the well and water the sheep. Then they would put the stone back in its place over the well’s mouth.
