For all of them, ¹  the morning is to them like deep darkness; they are friends with the terrors of darkness.

The deep ¹  says, ‘It is not with ²  me.’ And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’

Have you gone to the springs that fill the sea, ¹  or walked about in the recesses of the deep?

It makes the deep boil like a cauldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment, ¹ 

You cleared the ground for it; ¹  it took root, ²  and filled the land.

When he established the heavens, I was there; when he marked out the horizon ¹  over the face of the deep,

There is no darkness, and no deep darkness, where evildoers can hide themselves. ¹ 

Rescue me from the mud! Don’t let me sink! Deliver me ¹  from those who hate me, from the deep water!

Don’t let the current overpower me! Don’t let the deep swallow me up! Don’t let the pit ¹  devour me! ² 

he reveals deep and hidden things. He knows what is in the darkness, and light resides with him.

You threw me ¹  into the deep waters, ²  into the middle ³  of the sea; ⁴  the ocean current ⁵  engulfed ⁶  me; all the mighty waves ⁷  you sent ⁸  swept ⁹  over me.

my face is reddened ¹  because of weeping, ²  and on my eyelids there is a deep darkness, ³ 

But you have said, ‘What does God know? Does he judge through such deep darkness? ¹ 

May he rain down ¹  fiery coals upon them! May he throw them into the fire! From bottomless pits they will not escape. ² 

Of Joseph he said: May the Lord bless his land with the harvest produced by the sky, ¹  by the dew, and by the depths crouching beneath;
