When God made me wander ¹  from my father’s house, I told her, ‘This is what you can do to show your loyalty to me: ²  Every place we go, say about me, “He is my brother.”’”

Then Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen by lot.

Jonathan once again took an oath with David, because he loved him. In fact Jonathan loved him as much as he did his own life. ¹ 

He also built high places on the hills of Judah; he encouraged the residents of Jerusalem to be unfaithful to the Lord ¹  and led Judah away from the Lord. ² 

the one who made his majestic power available to Moses, ¹  who divided the water before them, gaining for himself a lasting reputation, ² 

He made me walk all around among them. ¹  I realized ²  there were a great many bones in the valley and they were very dry.

He caused them to fall right in the middle of their camp, all around their homes.

He does ¹  amazing things that will be remembered; ²  the Lord is merciful and compassionate.

She persuaded him ¹  with persuasive words; ²  with her smooth talk ³  she compelled him. ⁴ 

“‘So I brought them out of the land of Egypt and led them to the wilderness.

“‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: On the day it ¹  went down to Sheol I caused observers to lament. ²  I covered it with the deep and held back its rivers; its plentiful water was restrained. I clothed Lebanon in black for it, and all the trees of the field wilted because of it.

I have received a distressing message: ¹  “The deceiver deceives, the destroyer destroys. Attack, you Elamites! Lay siege, you Medes! I will put an end to all the groaning!” ² 

I declared them to be defiled because of their sacrifices ¹  – they caused all their first born to pass through the fire ²  – so that I would devastate them, so that they will know that I am the Lord.’ ³ 

His master observed that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made everything he was doing successful. ¹ 

He named the second child Ephraim, ¹  saying, ²  “Certainly ³  God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering.”

fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth – just as he inflicts an injury on another person ¹  that same injury ²  must be inflicted on him.

He was Israel’s enemy throughout Solomon’s reign and, like Hadad, caused trouble. He loathed ¹  Israel and ruled over Syria.

Now Jeroboam had sent some men to ambush the Judahite army from behind. ¹  The main army was in front of the Judahite army; ²  the ambushers were behind it.

You allowed men to ride over our heads; we passed through fire and water, but you brought us out into a wide open place. ¹ 

You cause those who know me to keep their distance; you make me an appalling sight to them. I am trapped and cannot get free. ¹
